Operations on the BC&S

The Big Creek & Southern began using car cards and switchlists in 2013. We use the standard 4-cycle waybills used by other live steam and model railroaders. The exception with our system is that we do not keep the cards with the cars. The cards are maintained by the trainmaster at HK Tower who creates a written switchlist for each train's work on the railroad. Along with our new CTC machine, we are using the operations functions of JMRI Panel Pro to move toward a more prototypic traffic flow.

The trainmaster keeps car locations up to date based upon the returned switchlist when the train crew goes "off duty." We do not necessarily limit the length of our local freight trains but generally like to keep train length to 15 cars or less.
